Between Alpine peaks and the Dolomites

Luson is the ideal for day trips. In the middle of South Tyrol, far south from the main alpine ridge and in the middle of the Eisack Valley inside the  Dolomites.

The family hotel ****S Sonnwies is perfectly situated in Luson, the flawless starting point for many excursions: in the middle of South Tyrol, far south from the cool main edges of the Alps, in direct proximity to the Eisack valley in the Dolomites, near to the cities of Brixen, Bolzano, Sterzing, to the apple plateau of Natz Schabs. From here you can quickly reach all main destinations in South Tyrol, North Tyrol or Trentino.

The gateway to the World Heritage Dolomites

Luson, and therefore the Sonnwies are located at the foot of the Dolomites, at 10 minutes drive from the Katkofen Alm, and at 15 minutes by car from the mighty Peitlerkofel.

Since 2009, the Dolomites have been recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Their impressive beauty and diversity, inspire everyone who has ever been able to discover them or at the same time see them.

Lüsner Alm

The Lüsner AIm is South Tyrol's longest high alpine pasture and is located above the Sonnwies in the alpine pasture area. The gentle, lovely Aim
The landscape with a wonderful view of the Dolomites is ideal for family excursions.
You can stop for a bite to eat in one of the numerous managed huts. Our insider tip is the cross meadow Atm.
Walking time: about 45 minutes, 2.5 km

The Plose and the Woody adventure mountain trekking

The Plose is the ideal excursion mountain for all those who love action and fun. The cableway brings you to the mountain station and offers unique panoramas. Whether a climb over the theme path to the Rossalm or a fun drop with the Mountain Carts. It certainly won't be boring here.

Villnüss and Puez Geisler

The Man of the Similaun is worth a visit. The Ötzi Museum in Bolzano also shows you the capital of South Tyrol.
Even though Bolzano has almost 100,000 inhabitants, it has preserved its flair. The southern air under the Tyrolean arcades, a brilliant  mixture of north and south, of Italian and German. Definitely recommended: A visit to the Ötzi mummy at the archaeological museum. 
Travel time: about 60 minutes, 53 km.

Braies lake

A breathtaking mountain lake at the foot of the Dolomites. The Braies Wildssee in Braies is a spectacular walking experience. The location is an unique natural phenomenon. Old wooden boats can be borrowed to explore the small mountain lake. Plan a full day for this excursion, as it takes longer to get there but is definitely worth seeing.

The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology with Ötzi in Bolzano

Gentle wine hills, a blue mirror, high above the ruins of Castelfeder.
You will surely enjoy Caldaro.
A farming village with many wineries. A blue jewel among vineyards. The Lake Kaltern / Caldaro is pure nature enjoyment. (About 75 driving minutes, 64 km)

The Teiser balls, fossils, healing stones, semi-precious stones and crystals can be found in the Mineral Museum Teis Villnöss.
The Minerals Museum houses crystals & geodes from the Alps. Children can not only marvel, but transform themselves into real crystal miners, participate in museum educational projects and become real geo-researchers. Worth a trip!

Bolzano between Alpine and Mediterranean

A whole mountain valley full of mills, to marvel and comprehend. The Mühlental in Terenten is particularly easy to hike with children.

The Pustertal Folklore Museum Dietenheim near Bruneck

If you want to know roughly how you lived in South Tyrol 100 years ago, then the Pustertaler Volkskundemuseu Dietenheim is the right place. 

Old household goods, folk art, tools and mobile bases, kitchens, parlours, Sleeping chambers, stalls and hardships make a poor past come alive.
